It's that time of year again with the first big weekend kicking off College Football 2012.
Every Friday morning we'll post Woolard's Weekend Winners....predictions for some of the biggest and hottest gridiron matchups and contests. Obviously with being in the Southeast, Woolard's Weekend Winners will feature select SEC and ACC games along with a few high profile games from across the USA. We focus exclusively on the college game, leaving the NFL to others to figure out.
So, over Friday morning coffee (or bloody mary's), you can compare my picks to those of the Vegas experts and talking heads. We'll keep a running tally so you can see how great, or how bad, our picks turn out to be. And, if you are so inclined, you might be able to make mo' money.
And, new for the 2012 season is a video Big Pick of the Week featuring special guest experts. Kicking off 2012 in this week's video is George the Cat who will make his "purrfect" pick in the ALABAMA-MICHIGAN game. George hails from the Palmetto state and we appreciate him taking time out to lend us a paw.
For those hoping to see Hammerin' Hank the pet rooster, I regret to inform you that Hank has gone to the "farm." Seriously. Last weekend Hank was relocated to a farm in Coweta County, just south of Atlanta. Interestingly this is where "Walking Dead" is being filmed so don't be surprised if Hammerin' Hank pops up in a future episode but hopefully not being devoured by walkers.
Enough premummble. Let's get into Woolard's Weekend Winners, edition one.
NC State vs Tennessee...cue the moving vans. The Wolfpack send Dooley howling back to Knoxville. The Vols have had terrible luck in the Georgia Dome with their last win dating back to 1998 on their way to the National Championship. And, more recently, they've been embarrassed in the Dome by other ACC schools including Clemson and Maryland. No difference here.
Clemson vs Auburn...Can't go wrong with picking the Tigers since the second part of the Kickoff Classic features Tigers versus Tigers (or War Eagles or Plainsmen or Dying Oaks or We Won A National Championship with a Paid Player). In any event, Dabo's boys handle Cheezit and Company.
Georgia Tech vs Va Tech...as much as I like the Ramblin Wreck, it's Beamer over Buzz. Tough game to start a season. And the winner of this Coastal Division match up has historically been the rep in the ACC Championship Game. Be sure to check out the Jacket's head gear.
Kentucky vs Louisville...Charlie's Cards "strong-arm" (see what I did there?) the kitty kats of Lexington in a lopsided game featuring a new quarterback for Kentucky. This ain't roundball, son.
Southern Miss vs Nebraska...Pellini's pals welcome the Golden Eagles from Hattiesburg to a season opener of corn hole. It won't be pretty. Special shout out to Harry Husker and his lovely princess, Glynda, as they cheer on the Big Red in Lincoln.
Southern Cal vs Hawaii...other than a nice pay check why do the Rainbow Warriors subject themselves to such abuse? Kiffin, the little weener that left Knoxville just three weeks before NSD in 2010 (still sensitive), shows why he really is a great offensive mind as the Trojans begin their campaign for a National Championship.
Boise State vs Michigan State...despite Boise's track record of knocking off big teams in season openers (e.g. Georgia, Va Tech, Oregon), Sparty's defense busts the Broncos in a matchup of ranked teams. And, yes, you can be thankful this game is being played in East Lansing and not on that hideous blue carpet that only Canadian Geese find attractive.
